Matilda Bjurstrom

Matilda was born on the small island Styrsö in the archipelago of Gothenburg, Sweden in 1993. Her fascination with nature lead her to study subjects such as marine biology and earth sciences, but sailing and travelling in her early youth and several long-distance sailing trips in her teens made lasting visual impressions and pushed her in an artistic rather than scientific direction.

She applied to The Florence Academy of Art Sweden in 2013, with no previous art education. She began teaching as a student instructor in the drawing/painting program in her second year. At the same time she was assisting Stephen Bauman in the Anatomy and Écorché program, which she became the director of towards the end of her third year.
