The Florence Academy of Art has four studios in the center of Florence to provide students in drawing, painting and sculpture the working conditions we believe essential for training a realist artist. The Intensive Drawing Program, our main offices, and art gallery are just behind the Church of Santa Croce, and a short walk from the Duomo, the Accademia and the Uffizi Gallery. The studios for second and third year Painting students, and the Sculpture studios, are located in typical Florentine neighborhoods a few minutes walk from the main studio.
Our gallery in the main studio on Via delle Casine houses several 19th century academic drawings, and a growing collection of drawings, paintings and sculpture by students and instructors of the Academy. These works are on view by appointment.
Mölndal
Mölndal is a small and picturesque community just 10 minutes outside of Gothenburg. The studio is located on the top floor of a renovated paper mill. A stream of water gushes past the building, and around it, a landscape of rocky hills and forest flourishes. The community of Mölnldal is devoted to maintaining its tradition of arts and crafts. It is home to a museum of local decorative arts, a theater, and numerous professionals working in art-related fields – from architects to makers of plaster casts and molds. Its proximity to Gothenburg allows students access to all of the conveniences and extracurricular activities of a major university town.
The program is an exact replica of the one in Florence in both the physical requirements of the studio and teaching method. Custom-designed skylights provide adequate natural light to the 500 square meter (5500 square foot) space. The Academic Director, Joakim Ericsson, and our instructors are graduates of the program in Florence and therefore trained in the philosophy, language of instruction, and methodology guiding the Florence studio. As a result, students may transfer seamlessly into the same level between Florence and Mölndal, or spend a trimester of study as an exchange student.
